Overcoming Falsely Identified Contamination

The BC Contaminated Sites Regulation (CSR) was not created with the upstream oil and gas industry in mind. Several MoE prescribed laboratory methodologies, protocols, or guidance documents are not appropriate for:


i. high moisture organic containing soils (muskeg),


ii. to differentiate phytogenic from petrogenic hydrocarbons, or


iii. to confirm if elevated concentrations of metals, salts, and sometimes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are due to naturally occurring background conditions.


All of these situations are encountered in northeast BC within the upstream oil and gas industry. SynergyAspen routinely overcomes these challenges of ‘falsely’ identified contamination by utilizing a number of regulatory-approved approaches for our Clients.
