Biographies for our leadership team and environmental client managers are provided as follows:
Daniel Gorsic, leader of the SynergyAspen team, began his environmental science career in 1994. Mr. Gorsic is a graduate of the University of Waterloo in Chemistry and Environmental Resource Studies and is also a member of the Association of Professional Chemists of British Columbia.
Daniel founded Synergy Environmental Strategies Inc. in 2007 and subsequently merged Synergy with Aspen Environmental in 2012 to form SynergyAspen Environmental Inc. He is tasked with leading and developing the company in British Columbia and beyond.
He is an avid tennis player and was a member of the volunteer fire department.
Margi Meekes has 16 years diverse experience in British Columbia’s oil and gas industry; with 11 years focused within the environmental sector. She has experience with construction and reclamation; Phase I and II commercial and oil and gas assessments; Certificate of Restoration applications for oil and gas activities; and large scale project management, including area based abandonment programs.
Margi was raised in the Peace River Region and has dedicated her career to environmental sustainability and the restoration of oil and gas disturbances, with a focus on soil health and conservation. Along with environmental work, Margi is a small business owner and has experience with surface land administration, developing and maintaining safety programs to achieve Certificate of Recognition status, bookkeeping, oil and gas operations and maintenance, and agricultural and farming practices.
Margi is also a proud mother of two, and a small business owner with a diverse background in agricultural practices and land administration.
Eunice Cheah has over 8 years of administrative experience and 4 years of human resources experience. She is responsible for managing all day-to-day human resources tasks, such as onboarding and offboarding employees, recruitment, benefits administration, policy updates, payroll administration, and assisting the Executive Team with any miscellaneous human resource projects and initiatives. She is also responsible for some administrative tasks in SynergyAspen, such as managing Deltek Ajera, organizing company events, stitching and sending reports to clients, and providing mentorship to the administrative team.
Eunice graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelors of Business Administrator in Human Resources and International Business and is currently a Chartered Professional in Human Resources candidate. She is expected to complete the program by Fall 2023.
Eunice was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and made Vancouver her home in 2007. She enjoys watching movies, baking and going for hikes with her dog.
Bret Detta has worked over 6 years in the private sector as an Accountant and Financial Analyst. Bret is responsible for managing both the Finance and FinOps departments, which oversee all financial aspects of the business. This includes financial reporting, analysis, budgeting, accounting processes, financial polices, supervision, mentorship, and assisting the executive team with any projects required. Bret has a focus on transparency, communication, and accountability when it comes to building financial processes and policies.
Bret graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Accounting and is currently a Chartered Professional Accountant candidate. Bret is expected to complete the program in 2024.
Bret was born and raised in the lower mainland his entire life. He enjoys playing soccer, hiking, and spending time with his friends and family
Jannelle McCarthy has over 12 years of experience working in the energy industry on projects in BC and Alberta. Over the last 10 years, her focus has been on Project Management in the Environment and Indigenous Relations business aspects. Jannelle has managed small to major projects, including coordinating the Aboriginal Environmental Technician Program on up to 6 concurrent major projects at a large midstream company.
Jannelle completed her Environmental Management Certificate at University of Calgary, Indigenous Canada Certificate at University of Alberta, Applied Project Management Certificate from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, and received her Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) designation through the Project Management Institute. Ms. McCarthy is eligible to write her Project Management Professional (PMP) exam and plans to receive her PMP designation in the near future.
Jannelle also has extensive senior administrative experience, previously supporting a team as large as 47 people, including a VP, multiple senior managers and supervisors, and advisers in Canada and the United States.
In her free time, Jannelle enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, hiking, weightlifting, and spinning.
Becky Paynter has worked in the oil and gas industry since 2005 and over 10 years specifically in environmental consulting related to contaminated sites. Her previous oil and gas industry experience enables Ms. Paynter to have a good understanding of the field logistics.
Her responsibilities as a member of SynergyAspen’s team include project management, account management, technical guidance, regulatory updates, innovative research, and planning and delivering training all levels of personnel. Her previous roles with SynergyAspen Environmental include site supervision, conducting Stage 1/Phase I investigations, historical file reviews, data gap analyses, various soil and groundwater investigations, spill responses, remediation activities, interpretation of analytical data, and technical report writing and reviews.
Ms. Paynter strives for efficient project completion and has high standards for quality of deliverables. Her passion for knowledge of environmental regulations ensures protection of environmental receptors, while simultaneously preventing unnecessary and overly expensive remediation through evaluation of potential risks with respect to each unique site using proven scientific methods.
Robin Ganderton has had success in his many different exciting jobs such as, mining projects all over the world, salvage diving, avid motorcycle rider, horse training, managed air tanker bases all over BC and Alberta, a backyard scientist and a very good electronics designer. He is fond of animals of all kinds.
Robin has been in the IT field for over forty years. From long distance terrestrial network to satellite networking, computer design, interface, and data management.
He specializes in network design and security and has built specialized micro-computer systems from the ground up, such as Computer vision, CAD/CAM, etc.
